PODIUM 2022 Session Presenters Proposal Form
PODIUM 2022 Choral Conference & Festival: Reimagine, Rebuild, Reconnect
May 19 – 23, 2022, Toronto, Ontario
Interest sessions at PODIUM 2022 provide a platform for members of the choral/group-singing community in Canada to learn with and from each other through a variety of presentation formats. In an exciting new development to our biennial conference, PODIUM 2022 will be presented in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and virtual attendees. The PODIUM 2022 Planning Committee invites the submission of proposals for the presentation of Interest Sessions.

What are Interest Sessions?
Interest Sessions may be presented either in-person or virtually and formats may include participatory workshops, lecture-recitals, reading sessions, and roundtable dialogues (60 minutes), research paper presentations (30 minutes), and poster sessions (20 minutes).

What is the conference theme?
Together, we will explore the theme of “Reimagine, Rebuild, Reconnect”. With the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic and the strengthening of collective calls for equity and justice, we have the powerful opportunity to reimagine the possibilities of our choral community. We can build together, with an inspired and intentional purpose, and we can nourish and expand connections throughout our broader singing community. By sharing performances and ideas, and creating space for curiosity, listening, reflection, and dialogue, PODIUM 2022 aims to inspire all who thrill at the sound of voices joined together in song.
The PODIUM 2022 Planning Committee is inviting presentation proposals that align with this theme. Particularly, Interest Sessions that address:
  • Indigenous culture, truth and reconciliation, and the 94 calls to action
  • navigating inclusion and exclusion in choral practices* and organizations (sub-topics include, but are not limited to, anti-oppression, global events, navigating access, inclusion, diversity and equity, and seeking justice)
  • pandemic choral/group singing journeys and practices
  • choral/group singing practices and musics of multiple cultures globally, that are not considered part of the Western canon
*Choral Practices is defined as any practices within the choral field, including administration, conducting, composing/arranging, management, board work, consultation, and any other practices and works that enrich our choral field.

Are there any proposals that are prioritized?
In addition to the topics outlined above, sessions in French and sessions by student presenters are highly encouraged and will be prioritized. The committee strongly encourages people who have not been to Podium, or presented at Podium in previous years, to apply. We are navigating ways to expand our collective and include participants and presenters who have historically been excluded (perceived as intentional or unintentional) in our programming. The PODIUM 2022 Podium Committee is available to provide specific accommodations for those seeking assistance to submit a proposal.

What about the presenters from PODIUM 2020?
Due to the cancellation of PODIUM 2020 in Montreal, Interest Session presenters who were scheduled to present have been invited to PODIUM 2022. There are still numerous Interest Session spots available for 2022.

How do I apply?
Proposals must be submitted by October 15, 2021,  through the PODIUM 2022 Session Presenters Proposal Form and must including the following:
  • 150-word description of Interest Session
  • 50-word abstract/description to appear in conference program
  • brief biography (150 words) and headshot of presenter(s) (high quality jpg)
  • curriculum vitae or resume for each presenter (one page)
  • technical requirements
Proposals will be reviewed by a five-member national panel.

It is understood that Choral Canada, Choirs Ontario, and the PODIUM 2022 Planning Committee assume no financial responsibility for travel, food or accommodation for presenters.  Any expenses incurred are the responsibility of the presenter.

Applicants of Interest Sessions are highly encouraged to be members of Choral Canada at the time of this proposal submission. In an effort to reduce any perceived or financial barriers to potential presenters, PODIUM 2022 will not require presenters to be members of Choral Canada. However, it is important to note that Choral Canada is a membership-driven non-profit organization and as such, annual memberships are a vital source of revenue for Choral Canada to be able to provide programs, services, and advocacy for its members and the choral community in Canada.

All selected presenters, including panelists, must be registered delegates for PODIUM 2022.
